How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging replace audi key it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. 5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle.
